SMITH II 2014/15 Cruise Interview

Q: So you have your new 2014/15 Cruise collection being shown at Glasshouse Studios on August 31! Since this is your first cruise collection, how was your process different in designing it rather than your past collections?

A: Very simple; it’s Cruise. That’s pretty self explanatory within itself. This collection is me working for the job that I want, like I said I want to be in Paris so I design my collections along side with industry aligned order of collections according to the particular season. And also just more skin appropriate sexy but chic looks.

Q: Were you inspired by any specific media (movies, music, art) to create this collection?

A: Actually there wasn’t any particular movie, music or art just simply the kind of women that is looking to be sexy chic and not have to speak a word about anything but yet attracts all the men to her.

Q: In the past you’ve used unexpected locations to present your collections, the latest being a skatepark. How did the idea for this location come about?

A: I wanted to do something a little more intimate and close quarters and also the lighting and windows of mood setting atmosphere went well with the mood I was looking to convey.

Q: What advice would you give to other designers that are interested in creating and presenting their collections?

A: That every little small detail and aspect of the construction of the garments to the music that moves people to the pace in which the models walk to the expression. The devil is forever in the detail.

Q: You will also be presenting your collection at New York Fashion Week September 9! How do you see Dallas as a growing fashion influence? Do you see a difference with collaborating with artists in Dallas versus anywhere else?

A: The Dallas influence will stem from me representing high fashion artisan aesthetic and getting outside cities and countries to see us more than just only a commercial state or city I understand that commercial pays bills but if done right so can high fashion but I also am not nieve to the amount of work that goes into high fashion and its not something you can be trained to be. You can’t teach a person to be a visionary, high fashion is either you are or you aint and there are more aints than it is are’s.

Q: You have one of the most striking looks in Dallas, do you have any tips for aspiring fashionistas on the subject of creating and curating their personal style?

A: Honestly its nothing to it and style is effortless when you have good taste and is one of those situations where you can’t teach style, its all about knowing what will work for you to the point you impress yourself and others without having to say it because it speaks for itself.
