Does life inspire art or does art inspire life?
I can’t say… but I can say that art inspired my outfit, one very specific artist, and one very specific movement. The Dutch artist Piet Mondrian and his skillful control of line, negative spaces, and primary colors is the genius behind this look. Simple, clean lines balance the large negative space in his works were an important contribution to the De Stijl art movement. Working in an unrestricted artist community, his signature developed from first grey lines which faded as they neared the edge to a dramatic black. He called this style ‘neoplasticism’; full of white black divided by black lines and balanced with bursts of color. In addition to exploring color theory in compositional balance, Mondrian eliminated any flourishes that would distract the viewer.
I mirrored his style in my look by focusing on primary colors and stark black and white contrasts, the black in my shirt and skirt and the white in my nails. My blazer is H&M, my bag Susie Straubmueller, my necklace Trent Mann, and my beret American Apparel.
